Are There Other Risks Linked to EBS?

Risks commonly associated with EBS:1

  • Skin Infection. Areas of blistering skin can become infected by bacteria.
  • Systemic infection. Bacteria from a skin infection enters the bloodstream and spreads throughout the body. These infections can lead to sepsis which can spread rapidly leading to shock and organ failure.
  • Problems with nutrition. EBS patients are at a higher risk for dehydration and anemia.
  • Skin cancer. Teenagers and adults with epidermolysis bullosa simplex are at increased risk of a type of skin cancer called basal cell carcinoma.
